On Sunday, September 25, 2016, the new auditorium/performing arts center of the Pine Island High School was officially opened with a Gala featuring high school musicians and over 100 alumni of the music department. Alumni came from as far away as Nebraska, and some had graduated as long ago as the 1960s. Some of these alumi had not touched their instrument since graduation! Featured were the orchestra under the direction of Moseph Mish, the wind ensemble under the direction of Barbara Hoppe and the choir under the direction of Doug Strandell and Michael Jeffrey. Musical selections included two numbers composed by Joseph Mish, the orchestra instructor. The audience was also treated to a sneak preview of "The Big Fish", a musical that students will be presenting at a later date under the direction of Kate Laack, the theater instructor. Students and alumni taking part in the Gala found it to be a rewarding and enriching experience, and the audience totally enjoyed the whole event. Everyone is looking forward to another such gathering in the not too distant future.
